Senior Moderates Tournament
The first senior moderates tournament of the season attracted a very good entry from across Norfolk. There was strong competition in the Ladies Doubles, which was played in one group, with a number of the county junior squad members entering to match their talents against their elders. Indeed, the deciding match proved to be a re-run of the Under 17s Girls Doubles final from the week before, in which Serena Verney and Louise Thacker again triumphed, beating Sophie Piper and Holly Bowen 21-12.
The mens doubles was equally as strong, with 14 pairs competing in two boxes. The first group was won by Tim Vickers and Craig Lovatt, from David Guy and Paul Holmes, whilst the other group was won by James Spinks and Ricky Dally from the Under 17s Boys Doubles champions, Luke Cox and Mark Robinson. In the first semi-final the experience of Vickers and Lovatt beat the youthfulness of Cox and Robinson 21-11, whilst, in the other semi-final Spinks and Dally beat Guy and Holmes 21-14. The final was always close with only a few points between the pairs until the very end when Spinks and Dally moved away to take the title 21-17.
The Mixed Doubles event also had 14 entries and was again played in two groups. The first group was won by the veteran pairing of Jeanine Roe and David Guy from the mother and son pairing of Gillian Varvel and Luke Cox. The other group ended in a three way tie with each of the pairs having lost one game. Positions were decided on points scored which meant that the winners, by one point, were another family pairing of Louise Thacker and her father Steve, from Joy Eglen and Darren Ellis.
In the first semi-final Roe and Guy edged out Eglen and Ellis 21-17, whilst in the other match Varvel and Cox beat Thacker and Thacker by the same score to set up a final which was a repeat of the first group game of the day. The final proved to be a very exciting game and the spectators were treated to a thrilling display of badminton, with the outcome never clear until the last few points., when the experience of former champions, Roe and Guy just edged victory from the new pairing of Varvel and Cox 21-18
The next moderates event will be held on Sunday, 21st March.
