Robinson and Bowen take all U15 honors
There was a very high standard of play at the Ashaway Under 15s County Championships with Mark Robinson and Holly Bowen eventually emerging as triple champions.
In the boys singles event, the three top seeds reached the final group stage with Robinson winning the title, Luke Cox taking second place and Andrew Carrier coming in third. Robinson then teamed up with Cox to win the doubles crown, with the scratch partnership of Chris Parrott and Tom Hinks taking second place. For the first time in many years, the entry for the girls singles event exceeded that for the boys and produced several excellent matches, causing a few surprises to the seedings.
The four group winners were Holly Bowen, Sophie Piper, Rebecca Chapman and Lauren Read and they played two very tense semi-finals, which resulted in Bowen beating Piper 21-19 and Chapman beating Read 21-18. Bowen won the final 21-14 to take her first title of the day. She then partnered Chapman to win the level doubles crown by beating Annie Giles and Louise Thacker 21-15 in the deciding match.
The mixed doubles was played in one group with Bowen and Robinson winning their third trophy. However,there were several close matches, which resulted in Cox and Giles just pipping Carrier and Piper into second place.
* The Under 14s moderates tournament for non county players was a great success, producing some very close and exciting matches. The boys singles was played in two groups, with Jordan Lott just beating Matthew Browne 15-14 in the first group decider. The second group was equally close with Andrew Cole beating Carl Bell into second place. Cole then won the final 17-15.
There was a three way tie for top spot in the boys doubles between Nick Schilling and Carl Bell, Matthew Browne and Ben Tozer and Andrew Cole and Jordan Lott. Schilling and Bell won the title having scored one more point than Cole and Lott.
The girls singles was an equally close competition. The first group was won by Helen Baldwin from Sophie Bugg, while Hannah Codling-Thomas beat Sophia France. Hannah then went on to win the final. She then teamed up with Bugg to win the double title from Baldwin and France.
* The Under 17s experienced mixed fortunes in their opening two Shires League matches, beating Cambridgeshire 12-8, but going down to Hertfordshire 13-7. Playing for Norfolk were Lucas Lefevre, Chris Piff, Lee Robinson, Craig Thomas, Kurtis Lefevre, Charlotte Crosby, Emma Davies, Holly Bowen, Rebecca Chapman, Briony Lund and Stephanie Rowland.
